Teeth Whitening Options: In-Office vs. At-Home

Teeth whitening is a great way to restore your smile, and reverse yellowing, stains, and discoloration to your teeth. But what’s a better choice? In-office whitening from Dr. Daniel Banks, or a custom take-home whitening treatment from Water Valley Dental? Let’s take a deeper look at both of these teeth whitening options now.

The In-Office Whitening Process

In-office whitening is done by Dr. Banks at our office in Windsor. After he’s approved you for whitening, you’ll come in for your appointment. Dr. Banks will begin by cleaning your teeth and then applying a protectant to your gums. Then, cheek retractors will be used to keep your lips and tongue away from your teeth during the whitening process.

Next, Dr. Banks will apply a powerful chemical whitener to your teeth and activate it using a UV light. This will be left in place for about 5 minutes, then rinsed away. After this, the process may be repeated several times, depending on your desired level of brightness.

The Benefits Of In-Office Whitening

The primary benefit of in-office whitening is that it offers very fast results. Dr. Banks can guide your treatment and use UV light to speed up the action of the chemical whitener, so this is a better option if you want fast results for a special occasion, such as an upcoming wedding or business event.

The Take-Home Whitening Process

After you’ve been approved for take-home whitening, Dr. Banks will need to take impressions of your teeth with special putty-filled trays. These will be sent to a dental lab, where a set of durable, reusable whitening trays will be made to fit your teeth perfectly.

You’ll come back in a few weeks to pick up these trays and get a set of whitening products, as well as instructions from Dr. Banks on how to use them. Then, you’ll go home and start whitening your teeth.

Most people will whiten their teeth for about an hour a day, but the details and treatment length may vary, so make sure to follow the instructions Dr. Banks gives you.

The Benefits Of Take-Home Whitening

Take-home whitening is convenient, since you can whiten your teeth on your own schedule. It also whitens your teeth more gradually. This can make it a better option for people with sensitive teeth, or if you want to subtly whiten your teeth without other people knowing that you’re getting cosmetic treatment.

Take-home whitening is usually also a bit cheaper than in-office whitening, and it offers the same professional-grade results, though it will take a longer period of time to see your full results.
