What To Do In a Dental Emergency – Follow These 4 Steps!

Dental emergencies can happen to anyone. Whether your tooth gets chipped while eating a piece of hard food, a tooth is knocked loose playing sports, you pull out a filling, or you notice a painful toothache, it’s important to know what to do, and how to protect your oral health during a dental emergency in Windsor.

So read on. In this blog from Water Valley Dental, we’ll discuss 4 simple steps you should take to protect your oral health, save your tooth, and get the care you need to restore your smile.

1. Recover Your Tooth, Tooth Fragments, Or Dental Work (If Applicable)

If you’ve lost a tooth, recover it. Grab it by the top, not the bottom. Rinse it in water and put it back into the socket or in a container of cold milk. Then, call immediately. You need to get help within 1-2 hours to save your tooth.

If your tooth is chipped, recover the fragments if you can, and put them in a container of milk. Then, rinse your mouth. If you've lost a piece of dental work, you can put it into a plastic baggie. Saving your tooth fragments or dental work may make it easier for Dr. Danny to replace them.

2. Call Water Valley Dental Immediately For Same-Day Care

We offer same-day emergency dentistry in Windsor. Dr. Danny always has room in his schedule to treat urgent dental issues, so call us at (970) 460-8989. Our dental team will give you more instructions on how to care for your mouth, and schedule a same-day consultation at Water Valley Dental.

3. Take Steps To Treat Bleeding, Pain, And Discomfort

Once you’ve scheduled an appointment, you can take a few steps to treat yourself before you come into our office in Windsor. If your mouth is bleeding, use a piece of gauze, a clean cotton ball, or a paper towel to absorb blood. Apply steady pressure to speed up clotting.

You can take pain medication to help with discomfort. We recommend acetaminophen if you’re bleeding, but you can take any over-the-counter medication if your mouth isn’t bleeding. If you have a topical pain reliever like Orajel handy, you can also use this to numb the area near the damaged tooth.

Applying an ice pack to the outside of the cheek near the affected tooth will also numb it and help with pain. We recommend 10-minute intervals with breaks to minimize the risk of damaging your cheek and oral tissue due to excessive cold.

4. Come To Our Office ASAP For Your Appointment With Dr. Danny

All of the above steps are temporary fixes. You can’t resolve your dental emergency on your own, and it’s important to get immediate care to prevent complications, eliminate pain, and restore your oral health.

So don’t wait. Drive to our office in Windsor or get someone to take you to Water Valley Dental as soon as you can. The sooner you see Dr. Danny to restore your smile, the better your outcome will be.
